The MIND CONTROL Glossary
The framework’s vocabulary, defined in the book’s own terms.
MIND CONTROL: A Practical Framework for Awakening and Conscious Creation, by Phillip Van Winkle, uses a small set of named ideas. This page defines each one so the words mean the same thing everywhere: on the page, in the Ask Althea community, in conversation. Nothing here asks to be taken on faith. Test every definition against your own experience.
Mind Control
The book’s title carries two meanings, and the whole framework lives in the space between them. The first is being controlled by the mind’s automatic programming, which is how most lives run. The second is taking conscious control of the mechanism that does the programming. The book is about the move from the first to the second.
The Four Circles Model
The framework’s map of what you are. Four concentric circles: C1, the brain and body; C2, the conditioned mind; C3, Divine Awareness; C4, Source. Most people live identified with C1 and C2 alone. The book’s driver metaphor keeps the circles distinct: the body is the vehicle, the mind is the GPS, awareness is the driver, and Source is the highway. Introduced in Chapter 3 of MIND CONTROL.
C1 — Brain and Body
The physical system: nervous system, sensations, the body’s own intelligence and its alarms. C1 is where regulation happens, and a dysregulated nervous system cannot host the rest of the work.
C2 — The Conditioned Mind
The accumulated programming: stories, beliefs, patterns, roles, and the self they add up to. C2 includes the Avatar and what most people call the ego. It can observe itself, which can look like awakening and still be inside the mind.
C3 — Divine Awareness
The witnessing presence that can observe thoughts and emotions without being consumed by them. In MIND CONTROL, Divine Awareness is what you are, not something you reach or access. It is always here, unharmed, never against you. The sky, not the weather. Also called the One Who Sees (Chapter 2).
C4 — Source
The infinite intelligence from which all consciousness arises. God, Universe, the Divine, Brahman, the Unified Field: the name matters less than the reality. The book is spiritual and not religious; it welcomes any name for C4 and any path to it.
The God Fractal
A complete, whole expression of Source operating at individual scale, the way each fragment of a hologram contains the whole image. You are not a piece broken off from Source; you are Source expressing itself as you. The title of Chapter 3.
Fused and Free
Two ways of meeting any experience. Fused means merged with it: "I am anxious." Free means witnessing it with space: "Anxiety is here, and I am the one noticing it." Ordinary awareness is C2 watching itself; Divine Awareness is C3 witnessing the mind. The difference is felt, not argued.
The Sacred Pause
A five-second interrupt between trigger and reaction. Hand on heart. One conscious breath. "I am here." It creates space between stimulus and response, and in that space choice becomes possible. The first act of reclamation in MIND CONTROL (Chapter 1).
The Sacred Return
What the Sacred Pause is for. Pausing without returning leaves you where you started; the return is the shift back to Divine Awareness, and every return strengthens the path. The weekly Ask Althea letter, The Ritual of Return, takes its name from this.
Self-Leadership
Consciously leading your internal Parts, emotions, and narratives from Divine Awareness rather than being driven by them. Leadership as an internal function, not an external role. The framework teaches self-leadership, not self-improvement: nothing about you needs fixing to begin (Chapter 4).
The Practice of Return
The ongoing rhythm of living from C3: notice, return, choose. The practice is not staying in Divine Awareness permanently. The practice is returning each time you notice you have drifted.
The Three Freedoms
What becomes available when you shift from C2 to C3. Freedom of Mind: you are not the conditioning; you are the one who sees it. Freedom of Action: you choose from your values, not from the programming. Freedom from Emotional Dependency: you no longer need anyone’s approval to be whole.
The Identity Triangle
The framework’s model of how a pattern becomes a self. Experience → Story → Belief → Identity: something happens, you tell a story about it, the story hardens into a belief, and the belief becomes who you take yourself to be. Identity then pulls thoughts, emotions, and behavior into line with itself, which is why willpower alone rarely holds. The center of Part Two (Chapter 5).
The Orbit Model
How Identity organizes a life. Thoughts, emotions, and behaviors shape one another, and changing any one of them can produce real change. Identity sits at the center, the organizing force that keeps pulling all three back into familiar patterns, which is why a changed habit or a corrected thought so often drifts back. Identity-first change does not fight that gravity; it changes its source (Chapter 6).
Inherited Stories
Stories absorbed from family, culture, and early experience before you could question them. The raw material of the Avatar.
The Avatar
The constructed self built from inherited stories, designed to win safety and love, and maintained through performance. It lives in C2. In everyday language: the public persona.
Parts
Identity fragments formed under overwhelm: protective strategies that crystallized when Divine Awareness was not yet available to you. A Part is a frozen Identity Triangle. It updates not from inside the state that created it, but when it meets a quality of awareness that state could never produce (Chapter 7).
Survival Archetypes
Five illustrative Parts the book describes: The Invisible One, The Performer, The Fortress, The Perfectionist, The Peacekeeper. They are a map, never the territory. Your Parts are yours.
The Five Rs
The book’s process for meeting a Part from Divine Awareness, in order. Recognition: noticing a Part has been activated. Regulation: settling the body first. Relationship: turning toward the Part with curiosity and compassion. Re-authoring: offering the Part evidence its frozen Triangle has never seen. Reintegration: the Part softening back into wholeness, on the nervous system’s timeline, not yours (Chapter 8).
Conscious Creation
Deliberately authoring your life from Divine Awareness by taking conscious part in the Experience → Story → Belief → Identity cycle instead of being run by it. The subject of Part Three, and the second half of the book’s subtitle.
Relational Leadership
Leading relationships from C3, with presence, boundaries, and mutual recognition, rather than from projection, reactivity, or role-playing (Chapter 10).
Divine Values
The values that emerge on their own when you live from C3 and C4: Love, Truth, Beauty, Goodness, Creativity, Service, Unity.
Love
Capitalized in the book when it names the Divine quality rather than a feeling or a romance. The book holds that Divine Awareness is Love itself (Chapter 2), and that Love is what you find when the patterns loosen.
Anamnesis
Plato’s word for the idea that learning is remembering. It is the book’s guiding philosophy: you already know everything in MIND CONTROL, not intellectually but intuitively, and the text is written to help you recognize it.
